Resume Les associations syndicales autorisées d’irrigation ont contribué depuis plus d’un siècle à l’essor de l’irrigation en France. Quelles sont les conditions d’une telle durabilité ? Ces structures pourront-elles s’adapter aux évolutions récentes des usages de l’eau et aux variations du contexte économique et politique ? À partir de l’analyse de leur cadre juridique et réglementaire, les auteurs apporteront un éclairage sur ces questions.

In this article we analyze through French Water User Association’s longevity, the sustainability of such local organizations. We first present five of the most important principle of their old legal and administrative framework due to the public voluntary to control ASA's destiny and then illustrate how this principles allows ASA to conform to most of the sustainable principles highlighted in institutional economy, in particular by E. Ostrom (1990) after several monographs of commons. But in the third part, we will point out the limits of these design principles regarding replacement of infrastructures, maintenance and adaptation to social changes and question the future of these WUA face to the last public policies and data of the agricultural statistics.
