Résumé
It is no longer possible in our “naturalistic” or “disenchanted” world to question superhuman natural powers. The trial by ordeal, a universal mode of proof in ancient law, is therefore no longer valid. Today, questions of religion and spirituality are supposed to remain confined to an intimate and private sphere, but the judgement of God is omnipresent in the “virtual” universe of the game and of all cultural productions. Between the disenchanted world and this virtual universe, which should remain separate, there are however intermediate forms, survivals of an animist or analogue world. Ordinary behaviours among drug addicts, adolescents and excessive gamblers are an example of this, constituting derivative, “used” or “popularized” forms of an ordeal that resists changes in the world.
