Anne Jadot et al., « The negative media coverage of the Fillon case: Perception as a scandal or plot, and a contrasting reception among voters », Questions de communication, ID : 10670/1.731045...
The Fillon case saturated media coverage of the 2017 French presidential election, generating widespread and multifaceted negativity. During the last two months of the campaign, panelized focus groups, individual questionnaires, and in-depth interviews enabled us to examine, among a diversified sample of citizens, the contrasting reactions to this scandal, its media coverage, and François Fillon’s defense strategies. Building upon this qualitative material, we present the variety of receptions and information processes leading to an update of the candidate’s image, as well as participants’ assessment of the media’s role, first in unveiling the scandal and then concerning its consequences. We explain these dynamics by referring to the respondents’ socioeconomic profiles and political anchors.
