Students who enrol in post-secondary education have to make a number of choices, such as which type of college to attend and what subject to major in, with important implications regarding their future earnings and career prospects. It is crucial, especially from the perspective of formulating policies to combat inequality of access, to try and understand how those decisions are made. Economic research on this question has focused on the key role of preferences and aptitudes for different fields of study, as well as on the importance of imperfect information and the effect of parental income on these choices.
