À partir d’exemples cliniques et littéraires, l’auteure se propose de confronter la notion de stigmate à son expérience de psychologue dans un service de chirurgie maxillo-faciale. Si l’approche socio-culturelle de la monstruosité faciale relève de la stigmatisation, la perspective psychanalytique permet d’en éclairer des enjeux paradoxalement structurants au sein du fonctionnement psychique et de souligner la fonction visagéifiante du thérapeute.

This paper draws on both clinical and literary examples as a means of comparing and contrasting the notion of stigma within the framework of the author’s clinical experience in a maxillofacial surgery department. While the socio-cultural approach to facial monstrosity is intimately linked to the question of stigmatisation, the psychoanalytical perspective sheds light on the paradoxically structural stakes at play in how the psyche functions, thus serving to underline the visageification carried out by the therapist.
