Vulnerable Frames of War? : The Series Homeland, a Heuristic Critique of the “War on Terrorism”

In this article the author proposes a hermeneutic reading of the US TV series Homeland about the “war on terrorism” against armed jihadism since 2001. He shows that this fiction – aside from the ideological readings one may have of it – heuristically explores the framing, out-of-frame, and reframing operations that jointly characterize the exploration of possible worlds through fiction, along with the work of the social actors engaged in contemporary wars. Through a detailed description of the narrative operations performed by the series in the trilogy of the first three seasons, the article seeks to show that here fiction coincides with the theoretical and methodological concerns of a sociology of war that has grown out of the decay of the post-colonial order.
