This study approaches self-learning from an original viewpoint, i.e., that of the cognitive and metacognitive strategies developed by the persons engaged in a self-learning project. It is based upon an experimental method, carried out in two multimedia centers in Loire-Atlantique (France) in May and June 2014, which combined simulations, observations, and interviews. The theoretical framework in which the collected data were analyzed is that of conceptualization in action, and more precisely of occupational didactics. The analysis endeavored to describe and characterize the self-learning situations observed according to the main concepts of occupational didactics. It provides new results which contribute to a better operational understanding of self-learning and suggest leads for more effective support of self-learning practices.
