On Frediano Sessi and other authors of children’s books on the HolocaustThe last few decades have seen the flourishing of children’s and young adult literature on the Holocaust and, more generally, on Fascism, the war and the deportations. These books vary widely in terms of their historical accuracy and the quality of their writing. Many novels are characterized by a clear imbalance between their highly accessible tone, ingenuous approach to history and the morals they champion and the level of knowledge that such arguments require. Yet these books do have the merit of helping to introduce the youngest members of society to the most tragic chapters in the history of Italian Fascism.Of these publications, the work of Frediano Sessi stands out, thanks to its rigor and its artistic skill. Sessi is a prolific storyteller for both adults and youth and he is also a historian. Further, he has translated Donatella Ziliotto and Milo Milani and other authors who have published interesting, well-written works over the last few years in which there is generally a first-person narrator who recounts what everyday life was like for children and teenagers during the war and the Nazi occupation of Italy.
