Jean Salanskis, « A Philosophical South », Autrepart, ID : 10670/1.77107b...
This paper reflects on our usual way of expressing moral, political or philosophical contents with spatial terms, like South, Western (Culture) or Left (Wing). It comes to the conclusion that such use is in some sense necessary and justified. In a second development, the paper focuses on making explicit what kind of ideas we connect with the South, which generate certain pejorative and devaluating images of nations of the South. It reveals some paradoxical tension, arising from the simultaneous occurrence of another group of associations that on the contrary convey positive value. The paper finishes with a brief discussion of the meaning of the newly arising notion of World, and addresses the problem of the re-contextualization of the category South in the light of such a new framework.
