In 1834, the writer and British diplomat Edward Bulwer-Lytton published The Last Days of Pompeii, a historical novel that recounts the tragic fate of the famous Roman city suddenly buried under ash. The international success of this novel after the manner of Walter Scott led six years later to the publication of a French adaptation for young readers orchestrated by the Catholic publisher Alfred Mame. How could this popular British novel, infused with romanticism, meet the religious and moral principles of this ultra-conservative publisher? What lurks behind this literary transfer that might justify its insertion in the Library of Christian Youth?
