Résumé
This article explores in detail the large semantic palette of concepts, contents and values related to the term “retraite” during the 18th century. In order to do this, a corpus has been built from dictionaries published at that time, as well as specialised dictionaries, encyclopaedias and dictionaries of synonyms. If it is undeniable that almost all dictionaries, dating back to the 18th century clearly accept the inheritance of the previous ones, many other concrete and figurative senses appear through objective and subjective mechanisms and some semantic variations occur.
