In the last years, knowledge and researches about perinatal psychology have grown exponentially, showing that mother’s mental state has very important implications in the emotional, cognitive and attachment development of the baby, but also in the couple and family unit. Gestation is not a protective state for mental health. The woman is more vulnerable to stress and the puerperium is a period of special incidence of appearance of psychic pathology. Nevertheless, there are still few welfare resources in perinatal mental health. Generally, patients do not ask for help and try not to manifest their emotional problems, so only a minority of cases are diagnosed.This article aims to address the importance of the mental health of pregnant women. A brief overview will be given of the psychological disorders that can most frequently be found in the perinatal stage and the most determining risk factors. Some existing programs for prevention, detection or intervention will also be reviewed.
