3.1 Ordination and First Curacy Hunt explains how, being out of sympathy with Calvinist theology, he was ordained in the Church of England. The details of his ordination are not transparent. He states: ‘The late Bishop Maltby admitted me to Holy Orders’, without distinguishing between deacon’s and priest’s orders. Whether ‘admitted to Holy Orders’ means ‘ordained’ is unclear. The chronology is puzzling, since Maltby retired in 1856, whereas, according to Crockford’s, Hunt was priested in 1857...
