This work focuses on the role and importance sugarcane plays in the Dominican Republic nowadays. Taking in consideration the history of the Dominican sugar industry starting from the Spanish colonization to today, this paper seeks to understand what are the issues that underlie this industry and what could possibly affect its development in the future. Moreover, in an analysis that will dive into both the public and private sector of the sugar industry, we will ask ourselves if in the current content of 2020, the sugarcane still plays a leading role in the Dominican economy and society.

Ce travail prétend s'intéresser au rôle que joue de nos jours la canne à sucre en République Dominicaine. En prenant en considération l'histoire de l'industrie sucrière dominicaine allant de la colonisation espagnole jusqu'à aujourd'hui le présent travail cherche à comprendre quels sont les enjeux qui la sous-tendent actuellement et qui impactent son développement futur. Aussi, dans une analyse qui abordera l'industrie sucrière dominicaine publique comme privée, nous nous demanderons si en 2020 la canne à sucre remplit toujours un rôle de premier plan au sein de l'économie et de la société dominicaine.
