Cet article retrace l’émergence du principal indice boursier belge (BEL 20), à travers une revue des autres indices qui ont, tout au long du xxe siècle, fait autorité à la Bourse de Bruxelles. L’étude des méthodologies mobilisées et des publics représentés met au jour la variété des significations – tant cognitives que politiques – que peut cristalliser un indice boursier, mais aussi les raisons du succès du BEL 20 dans cette lutte entre « conventions financières ».

This article traces the emergence of the main Belgian stock market index (BEL 20), through a review of the other indices that have been the authority on the Brussels Stock Exchange throughout the twentieth century. The study of the methodologies used and the populations represented reveals the variety of meanings—both cognitive and political—that a stock market index can crystallize, but also the reasons for the success of the BEL 20 in this struggle between “financial conventions.”
