Léopold Delisle’s contribution to the profiling of medieval manuscripts is immense, from his scholarly works on manuscripts and the history of libraries to his drafting of summary catalogues of manuscripts, enriched with each subsequent addition to the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale, not forgetting the rules he established for governing the scientific description of manuscripts for the Catalogue général des bibliothèques publiques de France instigated in the 1840s. Applying a rigorous methodology, these are the very rules that form the basis for the cataloguing standards put forward by the Latin division of the Manuscripts Department at the Bibliothèque nationale. Today, those standards have evolved and expanded with the transformations taking place in research instruments and the advent of digital tools for cataloguing, and they serve to make the bibliographic record a vital link in the collecting and organising of library science and documentation concerning manuscripts, as per the wishes originally expressed by Léopold Delisle.
