Résumé En

Impact investing in France began to gain attention in 2013. The country participated in the "Social Investment Task Force" led by Sir Ronald Cohen and supported by the G8. In 2014, a national report was produced by a committee of French personalities, bringing together representatives of early social private equity funds and organizations specialized in financing social activities. This report marked the start of institutionalizing impact investing in France. Using data from Twitter, we conducted a longitudinal study covering 12 years (2010-2021) to trace the growing popularity of impact investing and identify the key actors involved in its diffusion. Our data revealed how the notion of impact investment underwent a transformation, thus affecting the organizational actors who embraced it. We observed the convergence of solidarity finance and impact private equity, and in recent times, how major asset managers integrated the concept, shifting the focus away from financing social activities. This story also reflects classic characteristics of the French political economy, where the central state collaborates closely with the financial sector.
