Cultural Institutions currently often offer virtual tours of their collection on their web sites. These presentations rely on spatial metaphors and simulated moves, conceived to make the visitors feel as if that they are actually browsing this hence scenographed and textualised archive. The analysis of proposals issued by several museums leads us to reconsider the link between place identification and sense making. Then, considering the intellectual and technical choices on which these sites are built, we show that they emanate from persons which are not necessarily those in charge when in situ visit organization are concerned. This might change the way the collections are actually presented and represented.
