In 1862, Verdi’s cantata Inno delle nazioni was the object of an animated discussion which unfolded in the columns of The Times. From 1 May until 1 November 1862, the Great Exhibition, a world’s fair, was to be held in London and sponsored by the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Trade.
