Dieser Artikel gibt die Sicht auf Poincaré wieder, wie sie die „drei mathematischen Freunde“ (Hilbert, Hurwitz, Minkowski) in ihrem Briefwechsel formulierten. So ergeben sich auch Aufschlüsse über das Wirken und das Zusammenspiel der drei Freunde. Zusätzlich werden einige Informationen zu den jeweiligen Kontexten insbesondere zum Funktionieren der mathematischen Gemeinschaft vermittelt. Es ergeben sich neue authentische Sichtweisen auf Poincaré und sein Werk, wobei auch politische, institutionelle und individuelle Unterschiede zwischen den Akteuren und ihren Situationen deutlich werden.

In this paper Poincaré is presented according to his characterisation by the “three mathematical friends”—Hilbert, Hurwitz, Minkowski—in their correspondence. This provides insights into the activities and interactions of the three friends along with information on the contexts in which the mathematical community functioned. This provides an authentic new view of Poincaré and his work. Political, institutional and individual differences between the four scholars and their situations are made clear.

Cet article étudie la manière dont Henri Poincaré est présenté dans la correspondance des « trois amis mathématiques », David Hilbert, Adolf Hurwitz et Hermann Minkowski. Il permet de mieux comprendre les activités de ces trois mathématiciens, leurs interactions réciproques ainsi que les contextes dans lesquels ils ont produit leurs travaux. Il ouvre par ailleurs de nouvelles perspectives de recherche sur la réception de l’œuvre de Poincaré en Allemagne. Il s’appuie, pour ce faire, sur une analyse détaillée des positionnements politiques, institutionnels et individuels de ces trois acteurs.
