Suite à la décennie de guerres des années 1990, et sous l’injonction des institutions internationales, la République du Congo a réalisé un nouveau code minier. Le secteur a été ainsi profondément reconfiguré, de grands conglomérats internationaux remplaçant les petites sociétés d’extraction étrangères, suscitant l’espoir de retombées rapides pour le développement du pays. Alors que l’imposition de plus en plus fréquente de règles de contenu local pourraient laisser présager d’un possible développement des territoires, l’absence de reconstruction, le manque d’infrastructures et de formations professionnelles adaptées au secteur minier constituent autant de freins à l’activité minière au Congo, provocant autant de désillusions. Following a decade of wars during the 1990s, and on the orders of international institutions, the Republic of the Congo established a new mining code. The sector was radically redesigned, with large global conglomerates replacing smaller foreign mining companies, raising hopes of rapid economic impacts for the country. Although an increasingly frequent enforcement of local laws might point to a potential development of the territories, the absence of reconstruction coupled with the lack of infrastructure and of professional training adapted to the mining sector seriously hinder mining activity in the Republic of the Congo, leading to disappointments that are just as great as the expectations.
