"The Ancient Mode of Production and the Rise of the City-State : New Reflections on an Old Concept". This paper analyzes the concept of the ancient mode of production developed by Marx in Pre-Capitalist Economic Formations with the aim of highlighting the key aspects on which it is built to use it as a theoretical tool. Then, the central premises of the ancient mode of production are put in parallel with historiographical positions linked with the process of the emergence of the state as opposed to the city-state.
