« Limits without Borders ». Reflections on the Archaeological Perception of Space in Northern Neustria ( vth- viiith Centuries)The notion of border in the Merlovingian period at the confines of Neustria and northern Austrasia is, in this paper, the object of a strictly archaeological approach. It shows that archaeology often relies on natural geographical, ecclesiastical or cultural limits that undoubtedly define territories, but whose meaning and political fluctuations are but very partially reflected by material sources. The natural environment, the identification of efficient cultural criteria, the occupation of the land, the social and economic interpretation linked with the status of the rural and urban communities don’t allow yet to analyse their relations with real regional territorial entities. In this respect, we believe we can assert that the archaeological analysis of our regions is still carried out on territories with « limits without borders ».

La notion de frontière à la période mérovingienne aux confins de la Neustrie et de l’Austrasie septentrionales font, dans cet article, l’objet d’une approche strictement archéologique. Elle montre que l’archéologie s’appuie souvent sur des limites géographiques naturelles, ecclésiastiques ou culturelles qui dessinent certes des territoires, mais dont le sens et les fluctuations géopolitiques ne sont que très partiellement reflétés par les sources matérielles. Le cadre naturel, l’identification de critères culturels efficients, l’occupation du sol, l’interprétation sociale et économique liée au statut des communautés rurales et urbaines n’autorisent pas encore à analyser leurs relations à de véritables entités territoriales régionales. En ce sens, nous croyons pouvoir affirmer que l’analyse archéologique de nos régions porte encore sur des territoires « aux limites sans frontières ».
