Ancient philosophy can be considered as a set of spiritual exercises, which can be understood as the whole range of different disciplines meant to transform our way of living and of seeing the world, whether for ourselves or for others. Spiritual exercises require the elaboration of an inner or external theory as well as a daily set of practices. It seems that they also involve focusing both on one’s mind and on one’s body. It is therefore essential to emphasize that from Ancient Greece to the present, spiritual exercises have been linked to easy and daily practices, for example walking or hiking, as well as to more radical practices such as extreme sports.
