A spoiled spectacle. Staging popular mirth in Paris

Résumé 0

Public rejoicing on account of the monarchy in eighteenth-century Paris was an important feature of Ancien Régime society. The king’s need to ostensibly receive signs of popular approval of his policies required carefully staged affairs, involving several official bodies and the city’s authorities. Such events underscore the theatrical nature of socio-cultural rituals that followed a particularly complex and delicate political liturgy combining a display of both high-ranking figures and the Parisian populace. When boundaries were blurred, both sides were prompt to complain.
