Le but de ce livre est de rendre compte de différentes mutations conceptuelles travaillent la biologie contemporaine. Nous identifions la biologie à trois grandes questions d’ « origine » : comment se fabriquent la vie (Biogenèse), les organismes (Ontogenèse) et les espèces (Phylogenèse). Et, de là, nous identifions deux grands « super-cadres » théoriques qui les prennent en charge : Biologie moléculaire et Théorie Synthétique de l’Évolution. Cependant, ces cadres sont accusés de différents vices, en particulier de réductionnisme. Contre cela, beaucoup défendent un retour au « holisme », avançant un mode de pensée processuel qui donne le primat au dynamique sur le statique. Deux événements paraissent avoir joué un rôle déterminant : d’une part, le Projet Génome Humain qui portait les espoirs des généticiens a paru davantage être non pas un couronnement mais le commencement de nouvelles recherches ; d’autre part, la microbiologie a révélé tout un monde inconnu, fait d’Archées et de Bactéries, qui met en avant le rôle des symbioses et interroge un grand nombre de nos concepts : arbre du vivant, espèce, organisme. En réalité, le Projet Génome Humain et la Microbiologie sont les deux faces d’un même programme, dominé par les techniques de séquençage et consistant à dépasser le niveau de l’organisme pour collecter un maximum de données. La biologie est en passe de devenir une bio-informatique (ou bio-ontologie) ? La biologie a-t-elle besoin d’un aggiornamento conceptuel ou d’une véritable révolution théorique et méthodologique ?
