Résumé 0

"This paper describes the main d e - velopments of social sciences applied to healt h in Mexico. It begins with a brief description o f the three founding schools that have take n health as their subject matter: medical anthr o - pology, with a long tradition in this country ; s ocial medicine, developed basically by the Me t - ropolitan Autonomous University at Xochi m - ilco; and the sociology of public health, pr o - moted mainly by the National Institute of Pu b - lic Health. After reviewing the main contrib u - tions of these schools of thought, and the mai n debates that have taken place among them, thi s paper focuses on the main contemporary d e - velopments, a sort of “second generation” o f Mexican medical sociology. This review di s - tinguishes between theoretical, methodolog i - cal, and substantive contributions, the last one s being those related to the most dynamic an d productive fields. The paper concludes by poi n t - ing out the relevance of medical sociology i n Mexico and by arguing on the need to react i - vate the academic exchange and debate amon g the different schools, in order to increase th e quality of the scientific production in this field."
