Thefossa Neronis, the navigable canal conceived after the great fire of Rome in 64 A.D., work on which was interrupted in 69 following a revolt in Gaul, has left very visible traces along a great part of the Campanian coast, just as the cutting of the isthmus of Corinth, which was part of the same project, due to the need of rendering more secure the resupply of foodstuffs to Rome. Other evidence is provided by the "fossa del Castagno" between the lagoons of Fusaro and Lucrino, to which Tacitus' observation evidently refers, and the cut of Pisco Montano at Terracina. Among makeshift solutions are the works to make navigable the river Calore with a complementary function to the road built by Domitian and a water-mill included in the renovation of the bridge on the same river between Aeclanum and Beneventum completed in 1 26.
