Cet article revient sur l’histoire du corps comme territoire de perfectibilité indéfinie telle qu’il s’exprime dans le sport de haut niveau mais aussi dans la société actuelle. Après avoir montré comment cette histoire s’ancre dans la période moderne, où l’amélioration du corps était liée au fantasme d’amélioration de l’espèce ou de production d’un corps national, on se concentre sur certains aspects de la situation actuelle. En particulier, le fait que, dans la société comme dans le sport, le corps s’affirme à la fois comme un produit et un capital sur lequel on peut – et doit – investir dans un projet individuel. Mais on marque aussi une tension nette entre le sport de haut niveau, qui valorise la performance et l’exploit pour lui-même, et une conception du sport-santé, qui valorise l’amélioration équilibrée du corps en vue de la santé. Finalement, on souligne la très difficile distinction, à l’heure actuelle, entre corps naturel et corps artificiel, en particulier dans un domaine comme le sport de haut niveau où tout est culture du corps et artifice.
