The Jewish Press : A Transnational Political Space Between France and Germany : The Case of the Archives israélites and the Allgemeine Zeitung des JudenthumsThe Jewish press allowed French and German Jews to operate within a “transnational space” ( Ludger Pries). The Archives israélites de France and the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums effectively constituted sites of cultural transfer, allowing journalists in the two countries to actively participate in cultural and political exchanges that crossed borders. These exchanges could certainly be rife with conflict, and one can sense tensions between France and Germany in reading them. However, as discussions centered on the fight against antisemitism or the fates of Jews in other countries (which are closely analyzed in this article) demonstrate, these individuals also stimulated and enriched one another.
