Salazar and the Three France (1940-1944). Helena Pinto Janeiro. The France of Vichy and the Portugal of Salazar shared many points, in particular their common pretension of embodying a third way between parliamentary liberalism and communism. Portugal was a mo- del for Pétain while Salazar could take advantage of his complicity with the French government that came out of the June 1940 defeat. That did not prevent Portugal, throughout the war, from maintaining officious links with the opponents of the French regime in the circles close to General Giraud as well as with De Gaulle and the Free French. Salazarist Portugal thus had complex relations with the three France, trying to manage all the possibilities of entente with a country it considered as a great political and cultural power.

La France de Vichy et le Portugal de Salazar avaient de nombreux points d'affinités, en particulier leur prétention commune à incarner une troisième voie entre le libéralisme parlementaire et le communisme. Le Portugal a été un modèle pour Pétain, tandis que Salazar pouvait tirer profit de sa complicité avec le gouvernement français issu de la défaite de juin 1940. Cela n'a pas empêché le Portugal, tout au long de la guerre, d'entretenir des liens officieux avec les opposants au régime français aussi bien dans les milieux proches du général Giraud que du côté de De Gaulle et de la France libre. Le Portugal salazariste a donc eu des rapports complexes avec les trois France, essayant de ménager toutes les possibilités d'entente avec un pays qu'il tenait pour une grande puissance politique et culturelle.
