In this article, we explore the main features of metropolitangovernance in Canada. The first part of the paper is devoted to a briefoverview of the characteristics of metropolitan areas in Canada andthe system of local government. Secondly, we focus our analysis on theleading metropolitan areas, paying special attention to the reformsthat they have overcome in the recent decade. As we will see, theCanadian model of metropolitan governance is still dominated byinstitutional reforms, mainly the amalgamation of municipalities inthe metropolitan area. The next section of the article examines thereasons explaining the persistence of the institutional approach. Afterthat, we present the current trends in metropolitan governance, i.e. theclaims coming from Canadian cities for more legal and fiscalautonomy. We conclude the paper with some hints about the future ofmetropolitan governance in Canada.
