This chapter revisits the notion of the Labour Party having experienced a “neo-liberal turn” in the 1990s with the aim of questioning widely-shared assumptions about New Labour and Blairism. It first retraces the origin and early stages of this “neo-liberal turn” so as to contextualize the Labour Party’s conversion to the market economy. It then shows the different aspects of this “turn” during the Blair years. The final section focusses on post-Blairism and assesses the place of New Labour’s legacy in current Labour thinking. The contention is that the view of a New Labour “neo-liberal turn” tends to overstate the radical character of this turn and fails to take account of the role of ideological ballasts played by countervailing forces within the party.
