“Love One Another or Perish. ..” : On a Current Experience in the French Song

What is the meaning of the professional musical pratices in “Aimez-vous les uns les autres ou bien disparaissez...” by Juliette Gréco (Universal, 2003)? This paper gives informations about the different professional roles in this kind of musi~cal production: the producer, the sound engineer (an professional occupation which is given here an aesthetic aspect), the arranger, and mostly the singer. Each of this characters has his own musical experience and past, and has to deal whith those of the other musicians involved: “conventions” here have to be recreated. The album resultes of a complex collaboration, and few of the actors there have a global idea of what it will sound like: the sound engineer, because he takes the technical decisions about the sound; and, because they make choices at every stages of the work, the producer, the singer and the few persons she usually works with. Finally, in such an heterogeneous activity, the paper deals with the meaning of the musical pratices for the main character (Juliette Gréco) and for one of the various musicians involved: Laurent Cugny, one of the arrangers.
