In the months following the accession of Henry IV (r. 1399–1413) to England’s throne on 30 September 1399, John Gower (c. 1330–1408) composed an English poem in praise of peace, couched in the form of a verse epistle in rhyme royal and dedicated to the new monarch. The poem survives uniquely in a codex known as the Trentham manuscript, a collection of Gower’s trilingual poems (London, British Library, MS Add. 59495).
