In Dreamericana (2002), Fabrice Colin uses the character of Stanley Kubrick as a tool to convincingly set up a “novel in a novel” dealing with the relationship between reality and fiction. Facing a novelist stricken with literary impotence, Kubrick represents an ideal of simplicity, exceeding and bringing together fiction and reality, thanks to what he calls a “cinéma pararéel” [parareal cinema]. Moviemaking is thus used by Colin to suggest in his novel what lies beyond literature, symbolizing the potential a kind of performative writing may carry, allowing us to grasp an imaginary world that becomes real because it is fictional.
