Dominique Pestre, « The financialization of the environment as a rule : Between economic theology, pragmatism and political hegemony », Ecologie & politique, ID : 10670/1.9b52f0...
This article analyses how the environmental consequences of progress and human impacts on nature have been managed from the late 1960s until the present time, and to what extent this may help us understand why results have been so poor. It begins by commenting the idea of financialization as a rule. It dwells upon the vast variety of objectives and tools for environmental management, on the fact that “market instruments,” while holding sway in the media, are neither the most widely used nor the most decisive. The article further proposes a historical reading of the regulatory changes, while focusing on two moments: 1968-1972, when economists and their way of defining the nature of solutions achieved hegemony; and 1988-1992, when it became a question of voluntary corporate commitments in partnership with “civil society.”
