Neuro-anatomiste italien, Vincenzo Malacarne est considéré à partir de 1794 comme le fondateur de l’anatomie topographique grâce au traité, Ricordi d’anatomia traumatica pubblicati ad uso dei giovani chirurghi militari di terra et di marina1. Cette branche de la morphologie humaine sera largement développée au xixe siècle. Le texte publié en 1794 marque une rupture par rapport aux pratiques chirurgicales, et en montrant la nécessité de cartes destinées aux chirurgiens anatomistes, préconise l’utilisation systématique des connaissances topographiques. Cette méthode de localisation externe des parties internes du corps humain est élaborée entre 1776 et 17942 autour des différentes parties de l’organe cérébral. Ce sont les apports de Malacarne à la connaissance du cerveau humain dont nous proposons l’étude dans cet article.

An Italian neuroanatomist, Vincenzo Malacarne is considered from 1794 as the founder of topographical anatomy thanks to the treatise Ricordi d’anatomia traumatica pubblicati ad uso dei giovani chirurghi militari di terra and di marina. This branch of human morphology will be widely developed in the nineteenth century. The text published in 1794 marks a break with surgical practices, and by showing the need of maps for anatomical surgeons, advocates the systematic use of topographical knowledge. This method of external localization of the internal parts of the human body is elaborated between 1776 and 1794 around the different parts of the cerebral organ. These are the contributions of Malacarne to the knowledge of the human brain which we propose to study in this article.
