Jean Bert, « Marcel Mauss, or ethnology reflected in a library », Les Études Sociales, ID : 10670/1.9e31e1...
Marcel Mauss’s library, partly preserved at the media library of the musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, allows us a glimpse into the laboratory of the armchair anthropologist. It enables the documentation of singular research practices— especially readings—but it also shows how Mauss developed his own conception of ethnographic fieldwork, which he built in conversation with the American anthropology of which he was a regular reader, as well as in a relationship with travel, exploration, and missionary literature.
