Résumé 0

There are various spoken languages, vernacular or migrant-related, throughout mainland French territory, but only few are really socially valued. The article's main goal is to document the constructed hierarchy between those languages and how it is articulated to the unquestionable supremacy of French. We will review the status inequalities between those linguistic varieties, and study the possible consequences they can have upon internal family handing down. Thus, some parents choose not to keep on speaking their native tongue to their children, considering it too socially stigmatized, while others make sure that this cultural legacy, seen as a family memory support, will last regardless.
