In the second half of the 20th century, three “categories” were introduced by scholars to serve the study of the reception of Alexander the Great in Rome: imitatio, aemulatio and comparatio Alexandri. We propose to examine, through three practical cases, the problems generated by the use of these categories, and in particular an overly strict interpretation of them.

En la segunda mitad del siglo XX, los estudiosos introdujeron tres “categorías” para servir al estudio de la recepción de Alejandro Magno en Roma: imitatio, aemulatio y comparatio Alexandri. Proponemos examinar a través de tres casos prácticos los problemas generados por el uso de estas categorías y, en particular, una interpretación demasiado rigurosa de las mismas.

Dans la deuxième moitié du xxe siècle, trois “catégories” ont été introduites par les savants pour servir l’étude de la réception d’Alexandre le Grand à Rome : l’ imitatio, l’ aemulatio et la comparatio Alexandri. Nous nous proposons d’examiner par trois cas pratiques les problématiques engendrées par l’utilisation de ces catégories, et notamment une interprétation trop rigoriste de ces dernières.
