The aim of this dissertation is to approach the study of surfing in Ghana from a spatial and multiscale perspective. Based on research and private initiatives aimed at re inserting Africa into the globalized narrative of surfing and surf culture, this work takes the Ghanaian coastline as a laboratory for this process. Our field study focuses on the spatial context in which surfing is embedded in Ghana. It also aims to demonstrate how the practice of surfing is leading to a recomposition of Ghana's coastal geography, in terms of territorial planning, economic prospects and spatial imaginaries. At the level of the individual, we need to study how surfing affects both his integration into globalized networks and his territorial anchorage in the place where he practices. Finally, our analysis aims to understand how the new surfing related imaginaries are taking shape in the light of the emergence of multiple surfing scenes in Africa, and how they are contributing to the redefinition of coastal space at the Ghanaian level.

Ce mémoire se propose d’aborder l’étude du surf au Ghana dans sa dimension spatiale et multiscalaire. En partant de l’étude d’initiatives visant à ré insérer l’Afrique dans le narratif mondialisé du surf et la culture surfique, ce travail se donne pour cadre le littoral ghanéen comme laboratoire de ce processus. Notre mémoire de terrain porte sur l’analyse du contexte spatial dans lequel s’insère le surf au Ghana. Elle vise aussi à démontrer comment la pratique du surf s’inscrit dans une circulation dynamique conduisant à une recomposition de la géographie littorale ghanéenne, dans son aménagement, ses enjeux économiques et ses imaginaires. Cette circulation dynamique s’opère aussi à l’échelle de l’individu, jouant à la fois sur son insertion dans des réseaux mondialisés et son ancrage territorial dans son lieu de pratique. Notre analyse vise enfin à comprendre comment se forme les nouveaux imaginaires liés au surf à l’aune de l’émergence de multiples scènes du surf en Afrique et comment ceux ci contribuent à la redéfinition de l’espace littoral à l’échelle ghanéenne.
