Les relations internationales ne constituent pas une science mais un objet d’étude dont l’analyse nécessite l’utilisation de concepts empruntés à l’ensemble des sciences sociales et humaines. Cette approche interdisciplinaire des relations internationales a longtemps été négligée par les traditions juridique, historique et économique qui s’approprièrent cet objet d’étude. Ces traditions ont privilégié la notion d’État, l’héritage européen ainsi qu’une vision élitaire des relations internationales, éludant tout un pan des relations internationales. De plus, elles ne sont pas suffisamment indépendantes de la pratique des relations internationales et fortement influencées par le contexte géopolitique, comme en témoigne la corrélation entre le statut international de l’État et la place accordée à l’étude des relations internationales. La constitution de groupes de travail pourrait mettre un terme à ce réductionnisme abusif. Néanmoins, le manque de crédits alloués à ce type de laboratoire est un frein à l’essor de cette approche des relations internationales.

International Relations in the French Academic Field : A Heavy Inheritance International Relations are not a science but an area of study using analytical concepts borrowed from human and social sciences. This interdisciplinary approach of International Relations has long been neglected by the legal, historic, and economic traditions which have embraced this area of study. These traditions have privileged the position of the State, the European heritage, as well as an elitist vision of International Relations, which in doing so ignores an important part of the international approach. Moreover, these traditions are not sufficiently independent from the practice of International Relations and are deeply influenced by the geopolitical context, as shown by the link between the international status of the State and the place given to the study of International Relations. The creation of working groups could put an end to this excessive reducing vision. However, the lack of financial means allocated to this type of research laboratory slows down the successful implementation of such an approach to International Relations.
