In 2023, after a century of republican history, Turkey is at a crossroads. In addition to the centenary of the Republic, this year marks another political anniversary: twenty years in power for the AKP. To date, since the November 2002 parliamentary elections, the AKP has won every election in Turkey, establishing unprecedented political and institutional stability after decades of government instability. And 2023 is the year of two major events: crucial elections with high political stakes—the presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14—and the worst natural disaster in the country’s modern history. The February 6 earthquakes have been among the five deadliest of the twenty-first century and have taken a horrific toll.
