Until now, the *-attus suffix, which can be found in the names for the young of several animals in the Romance languages, has been taken to be of either pre-Roman origin or the result of the influence of other analogous diminutive suffixes (-ittus, -ottus). The present paper will show that it is a suffix created within the Latin language, and that it is taken directly from *gausapattus, the popular variant of gausapatus (‘covered in soft fur’).
