Marshal SAHLINS, PhD, Columbia 1954 & Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and of Social Sciences in the College, is presently doing research focused on the intersection of culture and history, especially as those play out in early-modern Pacific societies. He recently published a book of his anthropological and political essays ranging from the 60s through the 90s, and is working on two others: a set of studies in history and historiography and a multi-volume work on “The Polynesian War,” a history of the great Fijian War, 1843-1855. From time to time he drops these ethnographic particularities for high-flying cultural theory.

A l’invitation de l'Institut Interdisciplinaire d'Anthropologie du Contemporain (IIAC) - EHESS/CNRS (UMR8177), Marshall SAHLINS, Distinguished Professor à l’Université de Chicago a présenté une conférence intitulée : Stranger-Kings and Stranger Kin : The Alterity of Power and Vice Versa. Marshall SAHLINS est l’un des plus éminents anthropologues contemporains. Parmi ses nombreuses publications, nous retiendrons : Âge de pierre, âge d’abondance. Économie des sociétés primitives (1976), Au cœur des sociétés. Raison utilitaire et raison culturelle (1980), Critique de la sociobiologie (1980), Des îles dans l’histoire (1989), La découverte du vrai sauvage. Et autres essais (2007). Dernier ouvrage paru : La Nature humaine : une illusion occidentale (2009).
