Résumé 0

In 2017, 26.9% of French people were regular smokers, and more than half said they wanted to quit (Pasquereau et al., 2018). A sample of 37 volunteers in a clinical trial to test the efficacy of a drug for smoking cessation vs placebo were approached for interviews to contribute to an analysis of the social logics at work in the process of giving up smoking. Social factors include: differentiated trust according to gender about the effectiveness of the treatment, the importance given to willpower. Those elements refer to the social provisions and the objective and symbolic rewards expected or obtained in the context of cessation of practice. These results suggest the central role of these rewards in smoking cessation care.
