Claude Obadia, « The Mysterious Experience of the Beautiful », Le philosophoire, ID : 10670/1.a07fa6...
In this paper, the author asks and answers questions on the experience of beauty. Isn’t it first the experience of freedom? Doesn’t the beautiful ravish us precisely because of its ability to abolish the distance that separates us from it? How do we explain such a wonder? The answers suggest that the experience of beauty is first and foremost a perceptive experience, which inevitably leads us to question the experience from the object’s as well as the subject’s point of view. For the one, the beautiful is actually a multiplicity with unity difficult to understand. For the other, judgment of the beautiful is subjective, even though its objectivity is assumed without much thinking. These general questions are considered and intended by the author as initiation into the mystery of beauty.
