In Provence and Languedoc, some ceramics bear a text, a name or a date, incised, painted, or molded. In medieval times they are means of control of power, like stamps on measures or crucibles. From the 15th century these signs are divertfied; Shop or sponsor brands are also affixed to jars, garden vases, pipes,bricks, tiles and floor tiles. They are rare ron the tableware. Others types of texts are written on gourds, jugs, dishes commemorating a religious, social, sentimental or political event; The signature of some potters reflects the ego of the craftsman.But most often these processes testify first of an individual or collective practice. Indeed, they may be standards imposed by the craft brotherhoods. It may be also be a masterpiece of learning. In the 19th century tourist ceramics retain the memory of a trip or pilgrimage.
