Résumé En

The contribution reviews the evolution and transformations of the «agglomérations secondaires» (small towns, minor settlements) in the civitas of the Mediomatrici (Gallia Belgica). Recent research has renewed our knowledge, in particular of Tarquimpol, Senon-Amel, Bliesbruck-Reinheim, Sarrebourg, Herapel and Sarre-Union. For the High Roman period, the focus is on urban settlements by analysing their place in the road network, their organisation, the presence of monuments and public sanctuaries and the nature of the habitat. Late Antiquity is characterised by the occupation of most sites. The distribution of the fortifications, mainly built after the mid-4th century, confirms the importance of the main roads. The discoveries of militaria in Bliesbruck and Sarrebourg suggest the existence of defensive installations that have yet to be identified. In the second half of the 5th century and in the early Middle Ages, only a few of the settlements still constituted central places that were difficult to characterise precisely.
